The 42-year-old CEO of a company, who was jogging near the Worli Sea Face in Mumbai, was run over allegedly by a speeding vehicle on Sunday morning leading to her death, police said.
The deceased, Rajlaxmi Krishnan, was an avid runner and part of a runners’ group. The accused has been identified as Sumer Merchant, 23, a junior employee with a company that provides talent for Bollywood films. DCP (Zone III) Akbar Pathan said, “We have sent his blood samples for testing to check if he was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place.”
An officer said the incident took place around 6.30 am when the accused, who was driving a Tata Nexon, hit his vehicle on a divider, following which it swerved at high speed and hit Krishnan, killing her. She was thrown away in the impact. The driver sustained injuries in the incident, the police said, adding that Merchant was home the previous night.
An officer said that based on eyewitness accounts, the accused was driving at a high speed. Soon after the incident, local residents overpowered Merchant and handed him over to Worli police station where an FIR is being registered.
